Treadmill Motivation Tip

by AJ Farro

After I retired about 2-1/2 years ago, I bought myself a treadmill.  It was delivered to the house by a freight truck on a palette.  I rolled up the garage door and had the driver put it in there.  One look at it and I knew right away that I would never be able to move it into the house.  It was about 300 lbs.

After a few weeks of treadmilling in the garage, I got bored.  Then summer came and it got too hot.  Every now and then I’d force myself to use it, but couldn’t stand staring at the junk on the shelves in the garage.  So I cleared a space on one of the shelves and bought a little TV.  Now I could watch something while treadmilling.  Much to my surprise, turning the treadmill on interfered with the TV’s reception.  One more excuse not to use it.

Fast forward today.  I managed to get the treadmill in the house, but there is something about large things, whether it be furniture, Christmas trees, or treadmills.  When they are in a large space like a store, outside, or garage, you’re looking at it with respect to the space they’re in.  But when you get these large objects into the confines of a living room, suddenly they take up the more space than one could have imagined.  Oops!  That treadmill didn’t look so great in the house and come Christmas time when I get a tree, that is also too big for the house, the treadmill’s going to need to go back in the garage.

So there I was, finally with the treadmill in the house and I still couldn’t force myself to use it.  Then I got a SurfShelf and finally I could use my laptop on the treadmill.  I love my SurfShelf, but I must REALLY be lazy.  After a while I lost motivation.

Then I saw a blog post written by a woman who was bascially having the same issues I was having.  Lack of motivation.  She came up with an idea so crazy simple that it just had to work.  She was going to get on that treadmill for only 10 minutes a day, a ridiculously small amount of time and there would be no excuse not to do it.

Immediately upon reading her post I set my cell phone alarm to go off every morning at 9:00.  I’m always home at that time so there would be no excuse.

So how’s that working out for me?  It’s actually working and to make those 10 minutes really count, I set the treadmill to a fast pace and increase the incline.  As time goes on I’ll be increasing the incline even more.

If you’ve got the treadmill blahs and can’t seem to force yourself to walk or run in place for a long time, baby steps are better than nothing.  Set your alarm and give it a shot.

If your treadmill workouts are boring, the SurfShelf allows you to use a laptop or protable DVD player on your treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical.
